Sina Interview Part 3_1

The Four Sharp Weapons to Penetrate into China’s Market

Do you still remember the three Chinese young boys that was mentioned in the first chapter? Two years ago, these three young boys at the old SM building successfully joined forces, becoming part of the unbeatable celestial legions (group of Chinese trainees), which at that time did not only consist the three of them. In actuality, the number of Chinese trainees in SM have always been rising.

The boy from Beijing was endowed with a warm and hopeful name by his parents – “the fawn (Xiǎolù) at dawn” (the implied meaning in Luhan). This fawn stayed in South Korea for exactly two years, before the clouds were finally cleared, getting the permission to enter his long-cherished SM company. At SM, he was able to often see his long-time favorite idols TVXQ in the corridors. The very tall Canadian-Chinese who was called Kevin by his peers in Canada, while abroad, seemed very ordinary, for that on the streets there were many Kevin’s. His beautiful and elegant mother privately revealed that “I gave him the name Wu Yi Fan, in hopes that he will be an average person, live an ordinary life, have a ordinary job, and finally getting married and establishing a family… …” Changsha boy Zhang Yixing is known for being a performing arts perfectionist. After arriving at South Korea, it was obvious that compared to being a child star in Changsha than being a trainee in SM that it was much more restrained, and in the middle of it all many rumors surfaced, but none was the truth. In the year they were soon debuting, a young boy who knows martial arts and is from QingDao was added into the celestial legions (group of Chinese trainees).  In the eyes of many Koreans, Chinese people who know martial arts are exceptionally amazing, such that all Korean celebrities believe that Jackie Chan is China’s most stunning celebrity.

Presumably, these boys has a similar quality: handsome. Before entering SM, they never had the opportunity to sharpen their talents and let their talents shine but after some careful polishing, they then gradually began to shine.

After the 100 days of countdown, a group of 12 boys whose average age is about 20 years old and born in the 90s debuted under the name of EXO, dividing into two subgroups EXO-M & EXO-K, with M and K mainly establishing themselves in the China’s and South Korea’s markets, respectively. As for the four Chinese boys mentioned above, they are the four sharp weapons that will help EXO penetrate into China’s market.

“With a brand name like SM, there is a definite mass Korean fan base; having Chinese characteristics, is very important. Why did they include four Chinese members, why publish Chinese albums, the answer is obvious which is to readily attract Chinese fans. This way has virtually shortened the distance (between the fans and idols). Before you would have to shout fan chants that you did not understand, sing along to songs that you did not understand. But now if you go to your favorite idols’ events, you can completely use your own mother-tongue, such that this kind of closeness was never there before. The biggest reason for their success in the mainland is because of the increase of Chinese members.” When reporter Xiaohan summarized the reasons for EXO’s successful debut, he emphasized on the addition of Chinese members as the primary reason (for their success). What this reporter claimed and the feedback from the interviews done with EXO fans to write this article is very much the same. Within the fans’ feedback, there was quite a lot of people who before EXO’s debut did not like K-POP, but because of their like towards any one of the Chinese members, they became a member of EXO’s large fan army with great honor, and to an extent, some fans became one of EXO’s warriors.

Sina Interview Part 3_2

Say a Couple of Wrong Things Will be Blamed

“What is EXO?” “Who is EXO?” At the time of the 2012 April Beijing Debut Showcase, when the 12 of them arrived at the Beijing International Airport, there was a lot of fans were awaiting for their arrival, terrifying a lot of passengers; the scene at the SHOWCASE was even more overcrowded to the extent that, the reporters who were at the scene were not comprehending the situation. Sina Entertainment reporters can still recall that day’s interview as if it was yesterday, “Didn’t they just debut?” “My God, this group has so many members, I cannot tell the difference who is who! There were so many fans in the stadium, consistently screaming, that even when I came out I was still experiencing tinnitus, buzzing and ringing in my ears.”

Just like the previous day’s Korean SHOWCASE, EXO with exceptional looks appeared on Beijing’s Performance Stage, showcasing the same songs and dances, but that this time it is in Chinese. It is not very difficult to tell that, they are properly trained. Every song and dance was all carefully designed and a result of hard work and constant practice, such that from the perspective of rookies, there was basically nothing wrong in EXO’s performances. Xiaohan who have been responsible for the Korean Entertainment section for a long time said, “There was a sense of reverse in their characters, such that this group of young man changed back into young boys. Kai (in charge of dance) who was previously dancing with such strong presence and charisma, was so shy during his self-introduction; Luhan when he speaks it was obvious he was from Beijing, at the showcase he pointed at Xiumin and used a very authentic Beijing accent said, his nickname is BaoZi!”

Hereafter, because EXO-M which is made up of four Chinese members and two Korean members spent majority of their time promoting in China, they launched a carpet style promotion in the country. And the various types of problems that happened to them began to show more and more. “The first time they came to the recording of the Sina interview, it was very obvious that they were just woke up from sleep not too long ago, all were very clueless. It can be seen that they were rookies with zero experience, such that the recording was very long, they were very choppy, a couple of times said the wrong things, such as calling the members by the wrong name, and there were times when they were supposed to answer did not, but they were taking the interview very seriously. As a result by the time the recording was done, they were yelled at by their manager on the spot, because the manager thought that they were not performing their best.” Besides looking different, their personalities are also very different, such that when the camera is facing them, some had severe stage fright and others were seemingly calm. As Koreans, Chen and Xiumin at times had stress, they could not understand nor speak Chinese (even though they have been learning); for the Chinese members even if their Korean was not good they could at the very least maintain a basic conversation, and in China, for the Chinese members it was even more comfortable.

“Seeing them in person gives me the feeling that they are much more thinner and more delicate than seeing them on TV. The difference between them and mainland idols is that they are much more cautious and careful.” At the time still director at 《Happy Camp》Yuan Qi (has since moved onto《Day Day Up》briefly talked about the situation when EXO-M first went to《Happy Camp》for their prerecording, at that time, they debuted for not even a month and for the history of 《Happy Camp》this was very rare.

“I observed them for a bit and noticed that, no matter if they were seeing the directors, the behind the scenes’ staff or others, they were always bowing deeply and politely, such that they were very well-trained. But do not think for one moment that because they are very tall and serious-looking, they are always like that, in actuality behind the cameras they are very much like kids. At that time there was a segment that required of them to taste ChenDu delicacy, and the prerequisite is to answer the questions right, and afterwards those who did not answer the questions correctly was looking at me in a delicate and charming way, quietly asking me, GeGe can we eat? I said of course. Then they took a look at their manager, and when their manager had no reaction, they immediately scoffed down the food!” Ma Song (host and program producer) talked a lot about the details of EXO-M’s behind the scenes of the prerecording, frankly talking about the areas that the audiences could not see, saying that EXO-M are like kids who lives in an ivory tower, to some extent even though is seamlessly, but in fact is protected very tightly. “Off stage I started a conversation with them, and I could sense that they wanted to talk with me, but did not dare to, were afraid to say the wrong things. This made people feel a bit distant.”

Up until July, EXO-M’s promotion in China was coming to a close, and at the same time, promoting mainly in South Korea’s EXO-K was also making appearances on various music shows, variety shows and radio shows.

Those Who Go Up On Stage, Needs To Be Obedient

In China, the thing that makes various big name talent search and music companies be criticized is that, even though they might pick out a “idol” style personal, but he/she is not willing to spent more effort in training. “Becoming famous overnight” and “fast food” is the two main features of the culture of the Chinese Entertainment Industry.

In the first year of debut, the opportunities for EXO-M and EXO-K to collaborate for the most part is only in SMTOWN concerts, rather important award ceremonies, and other variety shows. As EXO, these 12 boys were brought to various countries in the world and participated in SMTOWN’s concerts. Besides performing title songs like 《MAMA》and《HISTORY》, they were also required to participate in special stage performances, and collaborate with the company’s other artists on joint performances. It can be said that, in training, SM did not go easy on EXO, nor was generous. For groups who have debuted for a short time to participate in grand performances and events, is still a rare sight to view, let alone these events and performances are in international contexts, and for EXO who were rookies to receive such valuable experiences, is truly remarkable. They are growing very fast, and this is very much a result of those performances opportunities.

In the same year, EXO unsurprisingly received various rookie awards. September 17th, EXO-M in a Chinese music award ceremony received the first rookie award, of the four Chinese members three of them shed tears on stage, and two of which were pouring down the tears, without care to their image. Some of the insiders of the industry could not understand, believing these awards are not much better than giving everyone an award, why did these young men react with such intensity? Afterwards we asked their representative in private, “They said that there was times when it was very difficult in South Korea, so to win this kind of award, for them is an affirmative response towards everything they gave since debut, to recall the past, is truly not easy, but these pains and stress were all worth it.”

Other people cannot empathize these kind of feelings and experiences, speaking of hardships, to become an artist who is not tired and stressed? Speaking of torment, to become an artist who has not felt depressed for a couple of days? But they are more like moths to a flame, before debut, it was difficult to predict the future for it can change into ashes (a flop) or heaven (success). There was a time when Kris (Wu Yi Fan)’s mom came to visit her son, only watching from the corner of the editor’s room of them prerecording the show, with eyes filled with tears. At backstage she made some remarks, and Ma Song who heard these words were having mixed emotions, and the moment that particularly left a deep impression was, “Every time I call him, he will always say everything is fine, say Mom I am all good. But I know that it is not so. He went to Korea alone, could not communicate through the language, he had to learn a lot of things from anew, and he is not well at expressing, so he will keep everything to himself. He was training in SM for especially a long time, there were a couple of times he was about to debut, but the opportunity was lost; about the debut, and was restrained… …This continuously gave hope and disappointment… …But every time he called me, he will always say, recently I am doing good, we will be debuting soon, Mom we will be debuting soon.”

Even though they have already debuted, they are still managed military-style, everything is adhered to the company’s and manager’s plans, and the staffs are responsible for maintaining and organizing their daily lives. Everyday there is a set amount of training that needs to be completed, going out has time restrictions, and they are not allowed to meet their parents based on their will. Even when EXO-M after debut was stationed in Beijing, even when Luhan’s home is in Beijing, he could not just return home as he wanted. Even if they were in the same city, they could not see their parents. In these boys’ lives the people around them, is about only the other members, manager, and staff members. Everyday the thing that they are in contact with, is a rather sealed and simple environment.

Sina Interview Part 2

Chapter ② : Mysterious “Alien Visitors”
Even the most experienced fans have never seen market strategies, unexpected leaders on the market

Sina Interview Part 2_1

Time is a ruthless thief, stealing your oppa, and stealing my oppa as well. In 2001, Taiwan’s TV drama《Meteor Garden》made the idea of an “idol” establish a foothold in the Chinese media circle. Also at that time, South Korean idol group HOT has already disbanded, the media overwhelmingly published headlines about the three members who dropped from the group, and who was also getting criticisms from the industry and fans, and getting crowned with “charges of disbandment” bent solely on profit. But hidden behind complicated reasons, and following the passing of time and fading of memory, it became a story that was not to be ignored. Years later, similar circumstances happened in a row to two of their “hoobaes” – Han Geng announced his withdrawal from SJ, unilaterally requesting from the company terminate the contract and let him return to China; TVXQ’s three members, Kim Jaejoong, Kim Junsu and Park Yoochun made an appeal, requesting a termination to their “slavery contract.” Such news really bring the listener to tears and hurt…..we made a promise that we will be each other’s angel for life, how come you give up just like that?

Whenever SM-Entertainment suffers from a “critical hit,” it is inevitable that a few blood cells are destroyed, combat strength (reputation) dropping dozens of degrees, but the thought of there being still a lot of young warriors still eager to advance to the front in waves upon waves, their hearts becomes consoled again. Ten years later,  resources about idols in the entertainment circle are no longer scarce, each region all has the qualifications and production rights of idols. There is a ring of competitors everywhere, new forces suddenly coming to the fore. Now-a-days no longer pointing to one’s country, and in the future for fear of what is done cannot be undone, SM executives rely on the constellations, highlight on secrets, assess the situation, work overtime to refine promotional plans of long-awaited cases for  new celebrities, and finally, establish a sufficient amount of zhènshè wǔlín’s secret book of martial arts to shake the industry.

First off, assemble the 12 pure and bright “aliens” and can summon the dragon.

When Idols Become Fixed Products – Fans Stay,  Idols Come and Go

According to SM’s experience, to create one top-quality idol, is never as cost efficient than to create a group of top-quality idols. In their experience handbook, “group products” including HOT, Shinhwa, TVXQ, SNSD, SUPER JUNIOR, SHINEE, F(x) all are successful samples that has contemporary significance. SM’s golden standards in the idol creation field is established, exactly through the influences these large scale groups have on the market. in their production lines, there is a more appropriate word than “idol”– products. Also these products need to be better than other companies, such that in the production process there must not be any carelessness. Therefore, they maintain such high production stats and standards, to make their market share bigger and bigger. However who can guarantee that a product will never lose its popularity (wear out) once it is on the market? Even when the most basic element of these products is “human,” it is still very difficult to avoid the parabolic fate of becoming a product that is no longer in demand. This is only a natural phenomenon. However if I was to group these products by stages, group by group, while maintaining vigor and vividness, will the overall trend still be low? So, when everyone has already accepted such preferences, used to these preferences, subconsciously viewed these idols as products, in the midst of new and old industrial systems they actually must come in full circles, it is very difficult to find a personal breakthrough. What is known as “fans are the same, while idols come and go”, is it not the reality of the situation?

Precise Marketing and Effective Promotion – Everything is a Surprise

By the end of 2011, SM officially announced – 2012 will bring a new group of exotic young men who “come from a different planet” and “are equipped with special powers.” If you followed SM Entertainment’s every move seriously, it is not very difficult to discover that, in regards to the news about the debut of a new group in fact has already been widely circulating for about a year or more, versions upgrading from 1.o to 3.0, and as long as the authorities were willing to disclose, relevant discussion will be have continue to spring up. However for a long period of time, they were always covered in a thick layer of a invisible cloak. They said, 100 days from now, we will take off the invisible cloak, but, the process and way of the reveal was never done before  and never heard of or seen before.

“Because SM this brand has already became a staple, they believe that to attract fans’ attention is not difficult, after all, many fans even before experiencing the groups’ induction into the industry, have already become attached to their artists in this family. And if you prefer Korean Entertainment, especially K-POP, then you cannot ignore any of SM’s strategic moves.” This was said by one of the industry’s workers who were unwilling to reveal his name. He believes that, it can be inferred from initial plans, the group of audiences that SM first aimed at was not those who did not enjoy wider non-Korean Entertainment, but rather at the relatively fixed large fan bases of Korean Entertainment.

For as long as 100 days of the debut countdown, was the time set a bit too big? It is truly unprecedented. Within 100 days, in the midst of fans’ anticipation, curiosity and anxiety, they continuously delivered a total of 23 teasers, which were interspersed with some fragmented video images, building up to a bust of mystery. Within 100 days, they just tell you a few basic things about the “arrival of aliens”: they are “fresh meat”, they can sing and dance, there is a favorite type for everyone in the group, and there is a total of 12 members. Assemble the 12 “aliens” and can summon the dragon

“The SM family has been pushing forward idols for many years, generally touching a few laws, such as within a certain time frame, they will push forward some type of group. For example SHINee, is a very typical boy group, which to some degree is running along the lines similar to that of TVXQ. This is why after SHINee, SM was pushing for another group, which will make everyone wonder what kind of style this new group will be going. Initial feeling is a bit similar to that of SJ, possibly going down a relatively peoples’ (friendly) direction, being that the number of members are about the same, but just more younger. However the launch was nothing alike, such that they are very mysterious, and with an image that is very new, this is why the feeling is very different.” Reporter Xiaohan who has been working in the industry for already five years recalls the moment when he just received a message about EXO’s debut, in the Korean Entertainment column of 《当代歌坛》, stated frankly that everything was unexpected.

Sina Entertainment Vol. 26 – Behind “EXO Craze”: Uncover the Story to the 12 Alien Visitors Making History

Sina Interview Intro

South Korea’s EXO in 2013 has successfully established themselves in the music industry, with sales breaking the one million record, winning several South Korean major music charts, taking home several awards such as Best Group and Best Song of the Year, and their annual income has been estimated to be nearly two hundred million yuan ($33,056,800 USD)! Good Heavens! In the midst of these great achievements, as a fan how much did you contribute to their fame and success? There surely be a lot of names of warriors (fans) on the list for military awards (support)!

In South Korea, EXO debuted two years ago from being a new group to making a big leap and becoming one of South Korea’s leading boy groups; in China, as an impenetrable force, with an army of millions of fans, instantly capturing the hearts of numerous post-90s, post-95s, causing media to fight for coverage, causing various functions to request for their appearances, and their value in commercial appearances continue to rise. How are they so hot! Could it be because they are practicing the arts of Qi Men Dun Jia?

The story needs to be told from the very beginning, let us take a look at how they overcome obstacles, overcome trials, brilliantly strike their place in the industry, and become famous within a short time. A glamorous “behind the scenes”, anecdotal rumors, with vie for position like that in ‘Zhen Huan Chuan’, and with an unbelievable cruel story, everything was not as beautiful as imagined, but of course it has not been too unbearable… …how much of their fierce fight  did you never knew about, how much of their  behind the scenes stories have you never heard about… …

In actuality, the effects of EXO should not be called “Became famous overnight” such a boring title, their story is much more complicated than “Analysis of the Cause of XX An Instant Sensation,” and this is not so much an anatomy of EXO, but rather that we are using EXO to dissect our own celebrity-making factory.

Sina Interview Part 1

Chapter ①: A Very Long Prelude
Start from a kid, these are called experiments are Idols

Sina Interview Part 1_1

In 2008, a boy from Beijing spent his 18th birthday in South Korea. At that time the Beijing Olympics was about four months away, every part of China’s passion and efforts towards public welfare for the most part all went towards the Olympics, and even this boy’s parents who are working and living in Beijing at the very least contributed effort towards this event. Turning 18 during the Olympics, big deal?! But for a boy becoming 18 years old, it is a big deal when “I am finally a grown-up, the world since then will be opening a big new door for me”! The only exception that makes the picture ahead not “quite right”: the first big gift accompanying this boy is not “a high school diploma”, but rather that with an impulsive vigor of an Aries, he went to South Korea alone. However, he who is naive, once he was no longer running on impulse awoke to the truth – besides having a sugar-coated bitter pill called “dreams”, he knew nothing about the beginnings of his future from this country’s perspective.

In 2008, there were two Chinese boys who have been in South Korea for some time already, one a lot earlier, one a lot later, through audition, they both entered into an entertainment company whose a name tells it all – – SM. Within these two one can speak English, is not necessarily someone who has been “ethnic Chinese” for a long time, is very tall; one can speak Changsha dialect, has some background on stage, has always preferred to be civic. The one who is very tall can play basketball very well, but on the very basis has no “artist” related quality, and in his original plan becoming a celebrity has never been part of one of his future career options; one is Hunan’s child stars, as if preparing to go down a route he chose.

In 2008, among a large group of SM trainees, it is very difficult for people to notice several non-Korean homogeneous minorities. After becoming a trainee, these few “squirts” (youngsters) besides regular academics, they have to undergo rigorous training, main training content is in dance and vocals, complemented by performances, etiquette, instruments… …one of them started to learn dancing since the fourth grade, and it was only in 2007 when he entered SM as a trainee, and because of his talent in dancing, among the trainees he became a gifted.

Sina Interview Part_1_2

EXO-K Makes a Guest Appearance @ Sina Entertainment

In SM, there is a large team of dedicated teachers who are responsible for training these boys. Among them, who are rather famous includes Japanese female choreographer Rino Nakasone (who worked with artists such as Britney Spears, Avirl Lavigne, Janet Jackson), Black Beat member Huáng Shàng Xūn, Chén Zài Yuán, etc. For these young trainees they laid a solid dance foundation. Similarly, the course of vocal classes and dance classes is the same, training is separated by different class levels according to various degrees, creating an atmosphere of survival of the fittest.

All those who being called “trainees” who enter the range of control in these companies, are similar to Frankenstein being placed in transparent containers as a product of science.

Their entire bodies are filled with bizarre tubes, that are endlessly importing various colorful energy sources, and before the glass covers are removed, warning signals of a faint glowing light on the blood vessels all show a consistent label – unfinished. This type of setting has a very high risk factor, and because there is a large number of them, Frankenstein can become the “cream of the crop” according to their needs, and the rest… …, besides becoming something of other uses, it can only be defaulted and abandoned. At the moment if there is a background music, it must be a phrase said by Miyamoto Musashi – -“In battle, if you make your opponent nervous, you have already won…”

Sina Interview Luhan

Name: Luhan
Date of birth: April 20, 1990
Height: 178 cm Weight: 53 kg
Role in the group: Main vocal, lead dancer, photogenic, appearance
Personality: Lively and cheerful, bright and righteous, kind and thankful, down-to-earth and modest, calm and casual, responsible, sense of obligation
Talents: Singing, dancing, performing, soccer, rubik’s cube, etc.

Sina Interview Part_1_3

Being a SM trainee, the amount of things to worry is honestly a lot! Time, money, stress, an unknown future, each one all is more than enough to surpass the amount of life’s burden a minority can bear. One, average age is young – very limited life experiences; living in a different country and surviving on an isolated island is not very different. Two, there are no guarantees in their future – can still be practicing at one moment and at the next moment can be sent away in shame; time is not something you can use as you want, perhaps the most spectacular years of life, youth, is exchanged here, which in the end can be simply all in vain. Three, fierce and cruel competitions – those who are lucky enough to debut as idols, stepped on many heads before climbing to the top, this part of the process has too much untold stories, all of which cannot be imagined… …

But even if this is so, many have chosen to make a gamble, chose this celebrity-making factory which has produced numerous very famous idols. Even if among them, many have not successfully debuted.

This is why if there must be a time as a divide (from pre-debut to post-debut) to open-up this story, it will be 2008. Although we want to take the idea of “there being an invisible red-line that is pulling each other imperceptibly” to render the atmosphere, but this kind of explanation is not suitable for recording down history. In history, 2008 does not have any meaning for EXO, even if for some of the boys they stepped onto their lives’ middle stop in that year, but there is no hint of presentation and foreshadow – four years later, they will become one group.
